At some point after this realization (Chinese art often portrays him as an old man riding a horse West while writing his philosophy), he writes the Tao Te Ching (Daodejing), which fundamentally outlines his philosophy in a series of poetic statements. I've used the Addiss and Lombardo recently–I'm kind of a sucker for their sparse style. In Liu Xiaogan's essay called, "An Inquiry into the Core Value of Laozi's Philosophy", he asserts that ziran(naturalness) is the core principle or value of the Dao De Jing. Dao is the highest order of philosophical Daoism and so there is no possibility to explain, describe and name it. Last month, New York Times critic Dwight Garner wrote a lukewarm review of two “philosophical” self-help books, the first installments in a series edited by Alain de Botton called The School of Life. The title is translated as something like, “The Classic of the Power of the Way of Nature.” Yin and Yang are not irreconcilable opposites like good and evil, rather they are metaphors for a changing reciprocal flow. Towards the beginning of Others, like Alain de Botton, might call such accusations snobbish and unjustified, reflexive dismissals of recent work in the venerable tradition of wisdom literature, a tradition that traces its lineage back to the Dao-de-jing. I'm teaching a Daoism course and I've been pondering a change in the Daodejing translation that I use. The writings of Laozi indicate a different approach than religion or philosophy. Replace the early Chinese philosophical terminology with equivalent terms from systems theory and the point of the text becomes equally clear. Of Integral Process" is a good translation of the title. It would be useful if somebody were to do a complete translation of the Tao Te Ching in systems language one of these days – though in saying that, I get the uncomfortable feeling that it's probably going to be me. The text is fundamental to both philosophical and religious Taoism (Daojia, Chinese: 道家, Pinyin: Dàojiā; Daojiao, Chinese: 道教, Pinyin: Dàojiào) and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism, Confucianism and Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Daoist words and concepts. Let look at Chapter 1 of Dao De Jing: 1. Achieving this state places one in tuned with the Dao. He wrote about the "don't know" mind.
